The Johnson High School Art Festival (★★★)
Come and see the amazing art exhibitions the students have designed for you this year. There’s a wide range of exhibits from sculpture through painting, drawing, calligraphy and handcrafts. We think this year’s selection of artworks is the best ever. The signatures of the Kings and Queens of England, a sculpture powered by wind and sun, a mural showing the school’s history and an embroidery of the school are among the highlights this year. There’s something for students and parents, young and old, and everyone’s welcome.
Sculpture Exhibition—All Visitors Welcome
Time: 9am—7pm
Place: Gallery No 2, Art Department
Date: July 7th—9th
This year our school’s Sculpture Exhibition is going to be better than ever. Visitors will see the best sculptures this school has ever produced. You will be surprised and amazed by the students’ works of art. This year for the first time you can see a moving sculpture powered by wind and solar energy. Also new this year is a huge sculpture which has taken four months to complete. It’s called “Reflections” and shows the reflections of buildings in a pool of water (3). Paint, paper, plastic and l are used to produce an unusual effect. It looks exciting and interesting. Traditional sculpture is represented too. This year students have produced sculptures of each other’s heads, and some of them are very lifelike. Come and see if you can recognise the faces.
Painting and Drawing Exhibition—Skill with Brush and Pencil
Time: 9am—7pm
Place: the School Meeting Hall
Date: July 2nd—4th
We are very proud of this year’s magnificent display of students’ paintings and drawings. The students have worked day and night over the last three months to make sure this year’s selection of paintings and drawings is the best ever. The highlight of this year is the mural showing the history of our school through the ages. You will see a painting showing the school as it grows from small beginnings one hundred and thirteen years ago (4) into the great place of learning it is today. Also on show is a series of drawings of nature from around the school. Students have produced drawings of animals, insects and plants from quiet corners of the school grounds. You may not have noticed these before. Try to guess where they come from (2). There are prizes for successful guesses.
Handcraft Exhibition—Designed to be Beautiful
Time: 9am—7pm
Place: the Sports Hall
Date: July 10th—12th
Come and see some new and exciting handcrafts in our school sports hall in July. Every year there is something new to show you, and this year is no exception. We have been working on some exciting new projects this year. Perhaps the most interesting is a series of models of Olympic Stadiums though the ages, from the Beijing Olympics of 2008 back to the very first stadium at Olympia in Greece. Other interesting exhibits include an embroidery of the school which will be displayed in the Head Teacher’s office after the exhibition (5).
Calligraphy Exhibition—Citizens and Kings
Time: 9am—7pm
Place: the School Library
Date: July 4th—6th
“The History of the English Language” is the theme of this year’s calligraphy exhibition. Students have produced calligraphy showing writing styles from the beginnings of the English language right up to the present day (6). You will see Shakespeare’s poems written using his calligraphic style. Another highlight is the calligraphy of the Kings and Queens of England from Elizabeth I (1533-1603) to Elizabeth II (1953 to the present day). You can see examples of their handwriting and signatures.

Dear Sarah,
I am glad to know that your school offers the lessons of Chinese arts. In your email you said that your teachers introduced the works by Qi Baishi and Xu Beihong. In fact there are some differences between their works although both lived in the same times and followed the traditional Chinese painting style. Qi Baishi observed the world of nature very carefully. It is said he had kept some shrimps in an aquarium on his desk and observed them carefully every day. Xu Beihong was famous for his lively paintings of horses and believed that artists should show reality not only imitate it. …
Looking forward to your ideas.
Yours,
Li Hua |
